Okay, so here is the dealio. I have decided that is is national Diva Weekend! I am celebrating my Top 10 Divas of Broadway that inspire me. My first has to be the incredible Bernadette Peters. Every diva has a special quality that I respond to, but I think what I respond to most in Bernadette is her innate ability to always stay true to herself. In whatever role she takes on she makes it her own by putting the Bernadette stamp of approval on it. Some people have given her crap for this, but I say to them, “how many Tony Awards do you have?”. That seems to shut them up sometimes. I think in order to be a successful star like Bernadette you are bound to have haters because if everyone likes you, you are not being your true authentic self. Bernadette as inspired me to find my true authentic self and stick to it. Her comedic timing, her sense of vulnerability, her ability to capture an audience and take them on a journey with story telling magic, and of course that voice! No one can top what she has. One of my favorite Bernadette moments was on the Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall where she performs “Not A Day Goes By” she is so caught up in the moment of telling this heart breaking story that the audiences applause actually startle her out of the moment and she remembers,”Oh, I’m at Carnegie Hall singing”. Of course that’s not a direct quote, but you know she was thinking something along those lines. I could go on and on about my love for Bernadette. One of my first Broadway soul mates I met when I was 13 years old was one of the first people to share my love of Bernadette and he and I would obsess over each recording that came out. When she lost the Tony for Gypsy my friend wore black to school the next day in mourning. That’s how serious we were about Bernadette. I mean I didn’t wear black, because I figured Bernadette already had 2 Tony’s and the likely hood of her winning more was higher than the likely hood of the person who actually won, who had never won before. Not that I have anything against the person who won at all. I just love Bernadette more. Anyways, I ramble. I think I’ll post some of my favorite Bernadette youtube moments after this post to show examples of her genius in case you are not familiar! As an actor I hope to not only meet Bernadette, but maybe even perform with her someday. A boy can dream can’t he?

WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO LEAVE BERNADETTE PETERS?! I mean REALLY. Bernadette is SINGING to you, asking you to stay with her….shit she wouldn’t even have to ask me to stay, I would be begging to stay. SMH.

So. Follies.

Where do I begin.

The show was absolutely phenomenal.

Let’s start with the women in the cast.

Bernadette Peters was incredible. Sally Durant Plumber is probably my least favourite character in Sondheimium and Bernadette Peters managed to make me feel so sad for the poor, dumb…
